# Shutdown in progress

> Resolve the error returned when the Maia runner that picked up your pipeline was already shutting down.

## Error message

This error can appear when using any component.

### Explanation

The Maia runner that picked up a component in your pipeline was already shutting down, so it couldn't run the work.

### Potential causes

* The Maia runner was being restarted, redeployed, or scaled in at the moment the component started.
* No other instance was available to take the work.

## Resolve the error

1. Wait for the Maia runner to come back online, then re-run the pipeline.
2. If another instance is available, confirm it's online so new work is routed to it.
3. Check whether a deployment or scaling event was in progress.
4. If you still need help, [contact Maia Support](https://support.matillion.com/s/) and include the items listed below.

   * The full error text.
   * The root pipeline execution ID.
   * The Maia runner ID and the time of failure (UTC).

### Prevent future errors

To prevent this error occurring again, [keep at least one healthy instance online](https://docs.maia.ai/docs/guides/scaling-best-practices.md#maia-runner-instances) while others are updated.
