# Timeout on blocking read

> Resolve the error returned when the Maia runner waits 60 seconds for a response from another service and gives up.

## Error message

```text wrap theme={null}
Timeout on blocking read for 60000000000 NANOSECONDS
```

This error can appear when using [custom connectors](https://docs.maia.ai/docs/components/custom-connector.md).

### Explanation

The Maia runner waited 60 seconds (60,000,000,000 nanoseconds) for a response from another service and gave up. It most often happens when an API you extract from is slow to answer.

### Potential causes

* The source API took longer than 60 seconds to answer a request.
* The request asked for too much data in one call.
* A temporary network or service problem occurred between the Maia runner and the source.

***

## Resolve the error

1. Check the source API's status and response times, and try the same request outside Maia.
2. Reduce the amount requested per call, for example by using a smaller page size or a narrower date range.
3. If the component has a timeout setting, increase it.
4. [Add retries](https://docs.maia.ai/docs/components/retry.md) with a short delay so temporary slowdowns don't fail the run.
5. Re-run the pipeline.
6. If you still need help, [contact Maia Support](https://support.matillion.com/s/) and include the items listed below.

   * The component and the source system.
   * Whether the same request is slow outside Maia.

### Prevent future errors

To prevent this error occurring again, [schedule heavy API extracts](https://docs.maia.ai/docs/guides/schedules.md) outside the source system's busiest hours.
